[LISTEN TO RENDERING FEELINGS]

Los Angeles, California (September 27, 2024) – Today, LA-via-Toronto duo The Darcys released their gritty and poignant new album, Rendering Feelings, via The Darcys Inc. Records. The album features the single “1986” – the album’s focal point. Self-produced by Jason Couse and Wes Marskell, and mixed by Matty Green (Royal Blood, Weezer), Rendering Feelings offers a richly textured listening experience that explores themes of love, identity, technology, and the complexities of modern life.[Purchase Rendering Feelings here.]

The mystique of Los Angeles, often a focal point of the duo’s lyrics, has faded now that Couse and Marskell are full-time residents of La La Land. With Rendering Feelings, The Darcys have turned inward, reflecting on how the past influences the future.

Discussing the record, Marskell said, “Rendering Feelings isn’t worldbuilding like Centerfold or Fear & Loneliness; it’s direct, confrontational, and honest.” He continued, “writing Rendering Feelings was about exploring our emotions, about trying to balance the peaks and valleys—from introspective moments to the most vibrant experiences of life—while incorporating themes of love, identity, and trauma. Even when the album is playful, with it’s lyrics about eating the rich, the treachery of technology and our mild obsession with UFOs, Rendering Feelings is far more raw and honest than anything we could have made before.” Marskell added, “I think we’re just growing up—we don’t have to hide behind so much anymore.”

“Musically, the choices are bold and different for us,” says Couse. “We dug into our early influences, finding inspiration in the songs and albums that originally got us hooked on making music together.” He continued, “We wanted to create raw expressions of frustration and uncertainty, channelling the early feelings of being young and finding catharsis through playing as loud as we could. This manifested in gritty, distorted, and deteriorated guitars, broken keyboards, and drums that sound like they’re struggling to break through before they explode.” Couse concluded, “It all culminated in an album with a ton of depth and texture, and it’s going to be very fun to play live.”

“In the end, the record is about growth,” Marskell reflected. “Rendering Feelings captures a more mature version of The Darcys and documents how far we’ve come, both as individuals and as a band.” He added, “It’s also about how growth isn’t linear. We all have the ability to fall back into old patterns, and when we do, no one is to blame but ourselves.” Couse added, “articulating these feelings into songs requires a certain level of awareness—especially when confronting the uglier things—and we used that as a promise to ourselves to be more intentional moving forward.” Marskell joked, “We should probably credit our therapists on this record. Even with the malaise of the human condition endlessly weighing on us, I don’t think people realize how much fun we have making records.”

For good reason, The Toronto Star labelled The Darcys “pathologically ambitious.” Over the past decade, the duo have earned a JUNO Award nomination for ‘Alternative Album of the Year’, scored a Much Music Video Award, and were long-listed for the Polaris Prize. Esquire said, “The Darcys embody the sort of recklessly bold artistic ambition that ruled rock music in the ‘70s but is significantly harder to find today,” Noisey called them, "primed for mass consumption” and NPR described their music as having a, “hooky sheen grounded by smart lyrics and heart.” In 2018, The Darcys began releasing a string of singles under their DIY label The Darcys Inc. Records, including “Just Here With My Friends,” “Ocean Eyes” and “Chasing The Fall.” In 2019 their single, “Better Days,” was deemed by Billboard “a downright fantastic summer banger.” The duo’s breakout single “Running For The HIlls” and follow up “Washed Away” have combined for a total of over 32,000 spins and over 42.5 Million audience impressions. In 2022, The Darcys Inc. Records reached the #8 spot on the Mediabase Alternative Rock Year End Label Share Chart.
